Preventing Influenza

Want to protect your family from the flu virus? Here are some helpful tips to stay healthy.

With every flu season our Trophy Club, TX, family doctors Drs. David Yi, Dr. April Enard, Dr. Paula Lansford-Seabaugh, and PA Carol Addy PAC see an influx of patients coming in with fever, body aches, chills, and fatigue. The flu is no joke. Want to safeguard yourself and your family from the flu? Here’s what you should do,

Wash Hands Often and Properly

Did you know that germs can even live up to three hours on the skin’s surface? Therefore, one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs is to wash your hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and water.

Not sure you’re washing your hands long enough? The CDC recommends singing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. You should also wash your hands,

  • Before and after preparing food
  • Before eating
  • After sneezing or coughing
  • After going to the bathroom
  • Before and after caring for someone who is sick
  • After handling diapers or animal waste
  • After handling garbage

Cover Your Nose and Mouth

Another way to prevent the spread of airborne germs is by covering your nose and mouth whenever you sneeze or cough. Instead of using your hands it’s best to cough or sneeze into the crook of your arm. By covering your cough you can prevent the spread of germs to people around you. After sneezing or coughing, remember to always wash your hands.

Boost Your Immune System

It’s also important that you are taking care of yourself, your well-being, and your health. This means eating a healthy diet, finding ways to manage stress, getting regular exercise and getting enough sleep every night. If you aren’t sure how to change your diet to boost your immunity or if you need help starting a new exercise routine our doctors can provide you with advice and recommendations.

Get a Flu Shot

No matter whether the flu strikes you down every year or you’ve been lucky for a few years now, getting an annual flu shot can provide you and your family with the peace of mind you need to know that no one with have to deal with the flu this year.

Keep in mind that you aren’t fully protected against the influenza virus the moment you get vaccinated. It can take up to two weeks to build immunity, so it’s important that you get your shot about a month before the flu season starts. Aim to see our Trophy Club, TX, physicians for a flu shot before the end of October.
