Coronavirus: What to Know

With Coronavirus cases on the rise in the US, here’s what you should know.

Coronavirus, or Covid-19, has been sweeping across the globe and across headlines everywhere. With there being at least 76 people in Texas who’ve already tested positive for the virus and more cases predicted in the coming days and weeks, our Trophy Club, TX, family doctors Dr. David Yi and Dr. Paula Lansford-Seabaugh want you to know more about the virus and how to protect you, your family and the community at large.

About the Coronavirus

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that affect the respiratory system. While these viruses often affect animals, some of these viruses can also affect humans. Other types of coronaviruses include Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Covid-19 is a new strain of coronavirus that is believed to have originated in Wuhan, China in December 2019.

Symptoms of Coronavirus

Symptoms of coronavirus may not show up for 2-14 days after exposure. Symptoms range from mild to severe, and usually result in a fever, persistent cough, difficulty breathing and overall malaise. If you develop these symptoms, or if you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for Coviv-19 it is important that you call our Trophy Club, TX, healthcare provider as soon as possible. It’s also important that you stay home and do not come in contact with others.

If you experience severe symptoms of respiratory distress or other health problems it’s important that you call 911 or seek immediate medical attention. Those at risk for severe symptoms include individuals,

  • With preexisting medical conditions (e.g. diabetes; heart disease)
  • With weakened immune systems
  • 65 years old and over

Preventing Coronavirus

There are steps that you can take to reduce your risk of contracting Covid-19. These preventive steps include,

  • Washing your hands often for at least 20 seconds each time
  • Not touching your face, nose, mouth or eyes
  • Disinfecting all surfaces of your home
  • Avoiding crowds or close contact with others, particularly those who are sick
  • Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze (and then washing your hands immediately)
  • Using hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol when soap and water aren’t available

Information about the Coronavirus is everywhere, but we have a particular duty to make sure that patients get accurate information about the virus as information becomes available.
